Annapurna Base Camp Trek – Two Weeks teahouse trek to the base camp of tenth highest peak in the world

There are very few treks in Nepal that brings you so close to the base camp of 7,000m and 8,000m peaks like ABC trek in such short time period.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek offers great introduction to remote Nepal and soaring peaks. This trek is an amazing hike through diverse landscapes and culture with full of alpine scenery, mountain vistas, emerald terraced fields and variety of floral and faunal species. Annapurna, the tenth highest peak, offers great hiking opportunity to trekking enthusiast without altitude problem in Himalayas. Moreover, we walk through Machhapuchhre, the revered mountain, which is known for its unique beauty. Staying at local tea house allows us to interact with local people and get acquainted with them firsthand.

The setting of Annapurna Base Camp is incredibly spectacular: surrounded by immense wall of rock and ice rising about 4,000m above on glacier moraine.  It is set amidst the incredible peaks like Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South (7,219m), Machhapuchhre (6,993m) and Hiunchuli (6,441m).

The Annapurna Base Camp trekking trip takes 7 to 14 days depending on the itinerary and the length of walking days. 14 day Annapurna BC trek itinerary offered “Annapurna Encounter” starts from Nayapul (1.5 hour drive from Pokhara) and goes north towards Ghorepani to explore the famous viewpoint at Poon Hill. Then the trail moves east towards Chhomrong before entering into the Modi Khola Valley which leads us the base camp. This route offers plenty of time to acclimatize for anyone who is reasonably fit and used to walking. Descending journey is made via Jhinu Danda where we give our tired muscles a well-deserved rest in natural hot spring.

The tea houses along the Annapurna trekking route offers comfortable accommodation and extensive menus. We can enjoy authentic Nepal dish as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian etc). Hot showers are readily available as well.

Physical Requirements and Experience for Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

It is moderate trek suitable for passionate hike with the ability to walk for 5 – 6 hours a day with a light day pack. If you are in good shape and have positive attitude, you don’t require any hiking experience for this trek.

Best Season to trek Annapurna Base Camp

Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the best time of the year for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp. The weather is good and so are the views. 

If you want to avoid crowd, it is also possible to trek during winter (Dec, Jan and Feb). However, the freezing temperature during winter might be suitable for every trekkers. Trekking Annapurna (June to August) is affected by heavy downpours but monsoon trek could be perfect for keen botanist.

Day01: Arrival at Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport (1345m)

Our Annapurna Encounter Trek’s airport representative will receive you outside the terminal hall. Please, look for our Treks play card. He will transfer you to the hotel, introduce your trekking guide and check the necessities. In afternoon, stroll around the colorful market of bustling city – Thamel.

Day02: Kathmandu: Cultural tours to Buddhist and Hindu Shrines and preparation for the trek

After breakfast, proceed for sightseeing around the famous UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu. We visit Pashupatinath Temple – the sacred Hindu temple located on the bank of holy river Bagmati, Boudha Stupa – the biggest stupa architecture in Nepal and Swayambhunath Stupa – the 2,000 years old legendary Stupa perched on a the hillock.

The sightseeing tour also covers the visit to Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, the Krishna Temple, the Kumbheswore Temple, the Golden Temple and many more. The sightseeing tour ends Kathmandu Durbar Square that is home to living goddess Kumari, Nautale Durbar, the Kaal Bhairav, the Swer Bhairav, the Freak Street and more.

Day03: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (220km/6 hours)

After breakfast, we drive along the bank of Trishuli and Marsyandi River to reach Pokhara. Today we get opportunity to capture the first glimpse of countryside life, terraced fields and emerald rolling hills. Pokhara is dream come true destination for backpackers with full of natural as well as cultural heritage sites.

Upon arrival at Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel at lakeside. After short refreshment, stroll around the lakeside and make necessary preparation for the next day’s trip.

Day04: Drive from Pokhara to Nayaul and trek to Ulleri (1960m/6 hours trek)

After breakfast, we take an hour drive to Nayapul (50km) and trek for about 20 minutes to Birethanti, a riverside village located beside Modi Khola. Then we head north to Hille before ascending to Tikhe Dhunga. Next we cross a stream (Bhurungdi Khola) over a suspension bridge before trekking to the large Magar settlement of Ulleri.

Day05: Trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani (2,800m/6 hours trek)

Today, we trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani. After breakfast at Ulleri, we will begin our trek to Ghorepani at about 7:30 am. The trail is similar all the way to Ghorepani. We discover rabbit, horses, flowers, waterfalls, small bridge and children on their way to school.

Day06: Trek from Ghorepani – Poon Hill – Tadapani (2590m/7 hours)

An early, ¾ hours steep climb from Ghorepani takes to Poon Hill grassy knoll. This landmark viewpoint offers excellent vistas of the daunting peaks from Dhaulagiri I (8,172m) and Upper Dolpo in the west, across the Annapurnas (Annapurna I, 8,019m), to Machhapuchhre (6,997m) and east to Manaslu (8,156m). To the south is an ocean of Sal Forests stretching to far horizon.

Day07: Tadapani – Chhomrong (2200m/6 hours)

After breakfast, we follow the east trail from the village and descend through the forest and farmland to reach the suspension bridge over Kimrong Khola Valley. This deeply incised gorge carries melt water from the Annapurna South, ice fields to the Ganges. After lunch, we trek through zigzag route and follow the forested trail of oak and rhododendron to reach the wealthy agricultural village of Chhomrong. Here we get the closer view of towering peaks.

Day08: Chhomrong – Dovan or Himalayan Hotel (2920m/6 hours)

Today we descend via stone staircase and cross the Chhomrong Khola. Then we climb high above the Modi Khola through its west bank and walk through the magical forest of rhododendron, bamboo and oak. Final day of the trek is followed by another ascent to Kuldi before climbing down to the village of Dovan.

Day09: Dovan – (Machhapuchhre Base Camp) – Annapurna Base Camp (Sanctuary) (4130m/6 hours trek)

From Dovan, we climb high above the river, on to the lateral moraine and descend down to the other side of glacier. With increase in altitude, the forest gives way to alpine scrub and grasses.

We explore the cave at Hinku (3,100m) and cross the ravine and major avalanche tracks to reach Deorali (3,140m). The view of Annapurna Sanctuary gradually appears as the trail approaches a ridge and climbs to Machhapuchhre Base Camp – best spot to take lunch.

Further two hours of slow and steady climb through the grassy slopes takes us to the ABC hotel built on Annapurna South’s glacial moraine: some 4,000m beneath the peaks that towers right next to us.

Day10: Annapurna Base Camp – Bamboo (2310m/6 hours)

A pre-dawn wake up call promises the grand view of peaks, glaciers and more. The ring of peaks, clockwise from Hiunchuli include Annapurna south, Annapurna I (8,097m/26,566ft), Singu Chuli (flutedpeak), Tent Peak (Tharpu Chuli), Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Machhapuchhre. Listen to the glacier grinding below you, in its U-shaped valley.

After breakfast, trek back to Deurali from Lunch and descend down to Bamboo for more comfortable night.

Day11: Bamboo – Jhinu Danda (1780m/5 hours trek)

After breakfast, ascend back to Kuldi and continue through the rhododendron forest before descending down to Sinuwa. From Sinuwa, we follow the trail to Modi Khola, closing our day with a climb to Chhomrong and finally descend to Jhinu Danda. We soothe at natural hot spring to relax our tired muscles at Jhinu Danda.

Day12: Jhinu Danda – Kyumi (1220m) and drive back to Pokhara (820m/3 hours trek and 2 ½ hours’ drive)

After breakfast, we descend through the forest of rhododendron to Kyumi Pass with the great views of Annapurna South behind. Next drive via jeep back to Pokhara that takes about 2 hours. After hotel check in and short refreshment, enjoy an evening walk around lakeside.

Day13: Drive back to Kathmandu via Tourist Bus (1310m/6 hours)

After morning breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu via tourist bus enjoying the mid hill scenery. After hotel check in, take a rest day off or enjoy free day at Kathmandu or catch up on some last minute shopping or explore missed physical landmarks in Kathmandu. Join farewell dinner organized by Annapurna Encounter to celebrate the successful completion of the journey.

Day14: Final Departure

Your adventurous journey in Nepal comes to an end today. Our airport representative will drop you to airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight.
