Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek also known as Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is one the short and easy teahouse trek in Annapurna region. This trek unveils the dramatic profile of some magnificent and highest peak in Annapurna region. We walk through the well-trodden route, follow the magical forest of rhododendron, oak and bamboo and cross several picturesque villages to reach Poon Hill. On the way, we admire the amazing views of 6,000m plus snow covered peaks of Annapurna range.

Hindu (Brahman & Chhetri) and Buddhist farmers are the major inhabitant of the region, along with two Tibeto-Berman groups – the Magar and Gurung who are famous for their bravery in British Gurkha battalion. The unique culture and architecture along with warm hospitality of these communities makes this trek more enticing.

A pre-dawn sunrise hike from Ghorepani to Nepal’s most visited viewpoint – the grassy summit of Poon Hill at 3210m is the major highlight of entire trek. It serves the amazing sunrise views and stretching view of snowy peaks – Dhaulagiri I, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, sacred mountain Machhapuchhre (the fish tail) and Manalsu.
The returning journey takes three days with a night stop a modern Gurung village of Ghandruk. An easy morning downhill hike leads us to a car at Nayapul and short drive back to Pokhara.

This trek is for anyone who have short time and want to experience Himalayan trekking or anyone who isn’t quite confident enough to undertake long trekking in Himalaya.

What to Expect?

The poon hill trekking difficulty isn’t too bad. The route we offer provides plenty of time to take rests when needed. Be ready to climb tons of stairs. Sometimes the trekking trail follows the narrow alleyway and steep slopes so be ready for some serious climb.
There are abundant choice of teahouse along the trekking route. Teahouse offer comfortable accommodation and extensive menus. Hot showers are readily available.
We suggest you to hold enough cash as the ATMs are not available along the trekking routes. Get ready to pay high as you rise high.

Best Season to Trek Poon Hill

Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the best time of the year for trekking to Poon Hill. The weather during these seasons is good and so are the views.

If you want to avoid crowd, it is also possible to trek during winter (Dec, Jan and Feb). However, the freezing temperature during winter might not be suitable for every trekkers. Trekking Poon Hill (June to August) is affected by heavy downpours but monsoon trek could be perfect for keen botanist.

Day01: Arrival at Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport (1,300m/4,260ft) and transfer to the hotel

Our Annapurna Encounter Trek’s airport representative will receive you outside the terminal hall. Please, look for our Treks play card. He will transfer you to the hotel, introduce your trekking guide and check the necessities. In afternoon, stroll around the colorful market of bustling city – Thamel.

Day02: Kathmandu – Pokhara (880m/2,900ft) – 6 – 7 hours’ drive

After breakfast, drive along the Prithivi Rajmarga to Pokhara with fascinating glimpse of rural Nepal and emerald hill scenery. The driving route passes through the lower Ghorkha region (beneath Manaslu), south of the epicenter of the first of the recent earthquake.

Transfer to your hotel at Pokhara. After check in and short refreshment, we join a trip to Pokhara city that includes Devi’s waterfalls and Shiva Cave. Enjoy delightful cruise on Phewa Lake before dinner

Day03: Drive from Pokhara – Nayapul (1,070m/3,510ft) and trek to Hile (1510m/4,952ft) – 1 hour 15 minute drive and 2 – 3 hours trek

After breakfast, we take an hour drive to Nayapul (50km) and trek for about 20 minutes to Birethanti, a riverside village located beside Modi Khola. Then we follow the Bhurungdi Khola to Sudame (1,340m) before rising gradually up to the side of the valley, Hile (1,510m).

Day04: Hile – Ghorepani (2,850m/9,350ft) – 5 – 6 hours trek

After breakfast, we start our day with long and steep climb via stone staircase to the village of Ulleri (2,080m). The village promises the great views of Annapurna South (7,219m) and Hiunchuli (6,441m). We continue rising up through the lush forest of rhododendron and oak for several hours, with rest breaks, to reach the prosperous village of Gurung. We observe the great view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri from Ghorepani.

Day05: Ghorepani – Poon Hill (3,210m/10,528ft) – Tadapani (2,520m/8,268ft) – 6 – 7 hours

A pre-dawn hike, ¾ hours steep climb, takes us to the Poon Hill’s grassy knoll. It is one of frequently visited viewpoint of Nepal. This amazing landmarks offers unobstructed view of Dhaulagiri (8,172m) and Upper Dolpo to the west, past Annapurnas (Annapurna I, 8,019m), Machhapuchhre (6,997m) and Manaslu (8,156m) to the east.

After breakfast, we join an eastern trail to Tadapani through the thick forest of pine and rhododendron.

Day06: Tadapani – Ghandruk (1,950m/6,398ft) – 3 – 4 hours trek

Today’s trail is quite short and concern downhill trek through the forest and cultivated farmland. We choose a route to Ghandruk – a densely settled modern village of Gurung community. Here we explore the surrounding area and visit the local museum.

Day07: Ghandruk – Nayapul (1,070m/3,510ft) – Pokhara (880m/2900ft) – 4 – 5 hours trek, 1 hour 15 minute drive

After breakfast, we head south and trek through the upper reaches of Modi Khola. Gradually, the trail starts descending to the village of Kimche (1,640m) and further drop down 500m lower to Syauli Bazaar. Now the trail becomes flat until Birethanti and then drop down on rocky defile towards Nauyapul. Here we board on a private vehicle that drives us back to Pokhara.

Day08: Pokhara – Kathmandu (1,300m/4,260ft) – 25 minute flight and sightseeing tour in Kathmandu

Drive to Pokhara airport to catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu. Take a day tour to Kathmandu’s UNESCO world heritage site. Visit Swayambhunath (monkey temple), Pashupatinath (most revered Hindu temple complex), Durbar Square (an architectural site that house ancient temple and Kumari, living goddess), Boudhanath (largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal) and Patan Durbar Square (ancient durbar of Nepal).

A car and drive will drive you to each landmarks and waits for you.

In the evening catch up on some last minute and join farewell dinner organized by Annapurna Encounter to celebrate the successful completion of the journey.

Your adventurous journey in Nepal comes to an end today. Our airport representative will drop you to airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight.
